Lawrence man sentenced to 21 months in prison for role in hotel arson

A 57-year-old Lawrence man has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for setting a North Lawrence motel on fire this spring.

District Judge Sally Pokorny handed down to the ruling Thursday afternoon, also sentencing Richard Pina Coker to 12 months of post-release supervision.

Lawrence Police spokeswoman Kim Murphree told the Journal-World in April that Coker was reportedly seen filling up a gas can at Woody’s Oil, walking to the Jayhawk Motel at 1004 N. Third St., and pouring gas on the south side of the building on April 1.

He was later taken into custody after police found a burn mark on the side of the building.

Coker pleaded no contest to the charge of intentional arson to a non-dwelling building on July 23.
