100 years ago: Schools renovated for beginning of academic year

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 25, 1914:

  • “The Lawrence schools will open this year on Sept. 14th. Superintendent Smith made several announcements this morning…. The buildings will be made ready very soon and all of the janitors will go to work next Monday…. A wooden floor will be placed in the gymnasium of the Central School for the use of Miss Crawford. The bubbling water fountains will be placed in the halls of the Central building and the High School and Quincy buildings will be entirely renovated. A cement sidewalk has already been laid on the south and east of the Woodlawn grounds.”
  • “Last night at 12:20 fire alarm was turned in at the fire department from North Lawrence. The fire was in a vacant house in North Lawrence. The house was located in the 400 block on Lincoln street…. This was the first chance the department has had to put the chief’s car into active service. It did not get to the fire very much before the hose wagon did on account of running in the mud in North Lawrence…. The siren on the new car is in working order now and it is not hard to tell when the department is on a ‘go.’ The new siren sounds very much like the fire whistle.”
  • “A delegation of the residents of the North Side appeared before the commissioners in their meeting this morning and told of the drinking parties that were being held on the North Side. They said that large crowds gather over there and have had lunches and drink most of the night on different occasions and the people of the North Side are getting tired of it. They asked the commissioners that they investigate the matter and see if it cannot be stopped. The men that appeared before the commissioners said that for their lunch they had fried chicken and that about three or four cases of beer were consumed at each meeting.”
  • “The Economy Shoe Store in the 700 block is to have a new sidewalk. It will be a good thing for the store and for the whole street, as the old one was rather rough.”
  • “Washington, D. C. — On a motion of Democratic Leader Underwood, the house voted to deduct from the pay of the members all time they were absent except in case of illness. All leaves were canceled. For days the house was forced to suspend business for lack of a quorum. The Republicans opposed the measure as a discrimination against northern members who are away on primary campaigns.”
