Get acquainted with navigating campus by foot

Procrastination is not your friend in college. While that may apply to schoolwork, it’s also true for knowing your way around campus.

That being said, here’s a piece of advice to incoming Jayhawks: Don’t wait until the last minute to find your classes.

If you live in a residence hall, grab your class schedule and ask a housing staffer to go through a practice route with you before the semester starts. The folks at KU Info are a great resource, too, and can be reached at 864-3506 or at multiple locations across the Kansas University campus, including their main booth on the fourth floor of the Kansas Union.

Still confused? KU’s Office of Design and Construction Management provides a helpful map that estimates how long it may take you to walk from one point on campus to another.

Each red circle indicates a five-minute walk from a spot you might consider the center of campus: the middle of Jayhawk Boulevard, near Strong and Wescoe halls. Factoring in KU’s famous hills may change your estimated time of arrival slightly, but this map will help calculate a rough estimate.

Assuming that most people can walk roughly a quarter-mile every five minutes, the map gives an idea of how long it may take an average student to travel from a geography lecture in Lindley Hall to a religion class in Smith Hall. Answer: about 15 minutes, if you hustle.

If you’re looking for a more scenic walk around campus, KU Recreation Services offers maps of walking routes ranging from 1 to 2 miles. Find the maps online at recreation.ku.edu/campus-walking-maps.

And, when all else fails, there’s Google. Here are a few estimated on-campus walk times, courtesy of Google Maps:

  • Lewis Residence Hall to Watson Library: 17 minutes (0.8 miles).
  • Kansas Union to Allen Fieldhouse: 14 minutes (0.7 miles).
  • Corbin Residence Hall to Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center: 23 minutes (1.1 miles)
  • Wescoe Hall to Watkins Memorial Health Center: 6 minutes (0.3 miles)
