Kids Voting is a nation-wide organization dedicated to educating youth in grades K-12 about the rights, responsibilities, and mechanics of participating in American democracy by providing an authentic voting experience that mirrors the official voting process. A volunteer is needed to serve on the planning committee. Responsibilities include attending planning committee meetings, assisting in recruiting volunteers, participating in “ballot box night” on Nov 4. Lawrence Memorial Hospital has volunteer opportunities in a variety of departments and at several locations. Volunteers with excellent customer service skills are needed to assist making appointments and preparing mailings at the Breast Center, to assist with clerical duties at the main hospital, and to serve as a Food & Nutrition Service Volunteer Ambassador at the main hospital. Headquarters Counseling Center is a community of Board of Directors Members, Advisors, Volunteer Counselors, and Professional Staff who are passionate about making sure that emotional support and safety are available to kids, teens, and adults in our Douglas County community, and for our state. Additional volunteer counselors are needed. The fall training class for Volunteer Counselors will begin in late September. An informational meeting will be held 6:30-7:15 p.m.on Aug. 27 and Sept. 3, at Headquarters, 211 E. 8th St., Suite C, to provide information about the responsibilities of the volunteer counselors and about the required training program. First Step at Lake View offers alcohol and drug treatment designed to meet the unique needs of women, pregnant women and women with dependent children. First Step at Lake View is seeking volunteer childcare assistant teachers to help support paid staff. As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to interact with children who have been affected by substance abuse. Volunteers will help staff with implementing daily lesson plans, redirecting behaviors of the children, and providing a positive structure environment. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County provides one-to-one relationships for children facing adversity. Big Brothers Big Sisters currently has 61 boys waiting for mentors. Are you looking to make a difference in the life of a young boy in our community? For a few hours, a couple times a month, you can give a “Little” the invaluable gift of your friendship. Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking to match an 11-year-old boy with a male, couple or family who enjoys playing games, watching movies, and all sports.
