40 years ago: Heat, long lines plague KU enrollment process

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 22, 1974:

Now in its third day, fall semester enrollment at Kansas University’s Allen Fieldhouse was going “lousy,” according to Gilbert Dyck, dean of admissions and records. Students had been standing in “giant lines and human traffic jams,” according to an article today. Dyck attributed the problems to several factors including trying to “run more students through Wednesday than we should have.” Access to the fieldhouse was controlled by a letter schedule, Dyck said, “and if it’s not just right, we have problems.” Too many students had tried to go through in too short a time, he explained, “and we probably need tighter controls that first half day. They all try to rush through the first afternoon.” In contrast, today there were “not enough there to make a line,” Dyck said. The total system needed to be updated, he explained. Another factor increasing frustration in the fieldhouse was the heat inside the building, which was causing some people to get short-tempered on this warm August day.
