Set aside the emotional baggage and once-shared cat. Did any of your exes leave you with practical advice you still use?

Independent filmmaker Lyn Elliot, of Kansas City, Mo., is seeking those stories and will be in Lawrence this week doing brief audio-only recordings of women sharing them. Recordings will ultimately be part of a short film she’s creating with four other filmmakers, including two from Lawrence.

Think how to bait a fishhook. How to drive a stick shift. Or how to find a stud in the wall.

For Elliot herself, useful lessons inspiring the project include how to pop popcorn and how to perfectly fold a fitted sheet.

“After going through a breakup about 10 years ago, I sort of realized that after the dust had cleared there were a few things I had learned that I was still using,” she said. She wants to highlight the idea that — beyond the big things or the emotional things — small things from past romantic relationships continue to affect you, too.

Elliot’s “Lessons from Exes” film project is being funded by the Rocket Grants program, a partnership between the Charlotte Street Foundation and Kansas University’s Spencer Museum of Art that encourages “inventive” and “under-the-radar” artwork in the region, according to the initiative’s website, rocketgrants.org.

Lawrence residents and filmmakers Misti Boland and Meg Jamieson are collaborating with Elliot on the “Exes” project, expected to be completed in May and then screened in the area.
