100 years ago: Site selected for Lawrence Country Club

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 18, 1914:

“The matter of selecting a location for a Country Club was brought before the stockholders of the club at a meeting last night…. The committee on location made their report and after carefully considering every phase they reported that the best location was the Foley place. And that the best proposition for securing the place was to lease it…. There were several of the members of the club that favored the Gwin place. But after careful consideration the Foley place was found to be better for location and the lay of the land was just as good. One objection to the Gwin place was that the site overlooked the cemetery which would be rather an objectionable feature to have before the view of the club…. The Foley place is located at the west end of Elliott [Fourth] street and is about three-quarters of a mile from the Indiana car line. The place contains about 80 acres and is well located for a country club. There is an exceptionally good location for a club house on top of the hill which is only a little distance from the road. There is a beautiful drive from the road to the proposed site for the club house being lined on both sides of the drive with beautiful large maples. The ground slopes from the house site to the road. The proposed site for the house is on top of the hill which overlooks all of north and west Lawrence and all of the country for many miles west and north of Lawrence. There is an exceptionally good location for tennis courts that could be put in good condition with a very little work and would be in the shade of some large mulberry trees in the afternoons…. The whole tract of land is a natural golf links. It is divided into two parts by a small stream which flows north through the land dividing the land into two equal parts with a hill on each side. There is a spring which would supply the club with a sufficient amount of water for their own use. It is located just a few rods west of the proposed building site and would be easily accessible from the house…. It is thought possible, but is not known, that the street car company will extend the Indiana line the necessary three-quarters of a mile to the club grounds. If this is not done there will probably be some means of getting those who do not have cars to the club grounds.”
