Police: No missing person in Lawrence, Friday night search just being ‘extra careful’

In the end police determined that it was just a case of clothing left in a park, but on Friday night Lawrence police and the Kansas Highway Patrol conducted an exhaustive search by helicopter near Naismith Valley Park.

Around 7 p.m. Friday, Lawrence police responded to a call of unidentified screams coming from Naismith Valley Park, 1400 West 27th St. Upon arrival, officers found a child’s clothing, but it was unclear whether it was connected with the screams, Lawrence Police Sgt. Ten Bordman said Friday.

Bordman described the recovered clothing as a child’s pink tennis shoes with “socklets” inside and a red T-shirt with the words “Methodist Bible School.”

Because of the circumstances, dispatchers said police wanted to be “extra careful” and conduct a search for a “possible missing person,” calling in the highway patrol to help with an aerial search around 9 p.m.

Bordman said Friday night that no official reports of a specific missing person had been made. By Saturday morning, dispatchers confirmed the incident was a case of “found clothing” and that no missing person reports were submitted in connection with the incident.
