Lawrence school district accepting applications for board vacancy

The deadline for applicants to fill a vacancy on the Lawrence school board is Aug. 29.

Earlier this month, Adina Morse resigned from the seven-member board because she was selected as the executive director of the Lawrence Schools Foundation, which provides funding to benefit students and teachers.

A Kansas Supreme Court ruling from 2000 says that a school district employee cannot serve on the board of education of the same district. The Lawrence school district employs the foundation’s executive director, although the foundation reimburses the district for the employee’s salary and benefits.

At its Sept. 8 meeting, the school board will discuss the applications received and appoint a member to serve the remainder of Morse’s term, which expires June 30, 2015.

The application form is on the district’s website, www.usd497.org.

This will be the second board vacancy to fill in the past three months.

In June, Bob Byers was chosen among 13 applicants to replace Keith Diaz Moore, who resigned to accept the position of dean of the University of Utah’s school of architecture.

Lawrence School Board President Shannon Kimball said the 12 other applicants for that position were welcome to be considered for the new vacancy.
