Off the Beaten Buy: Nose eyeglasses holder at Kretyen

Nose eyeglasses holder, 5, at Kretyen LLC Fair Trade Gifts and Coffee.

This mustached nose eyeglasses holder may be a bit hard to take seriously, but it’s completely practical for anyone who regularly forgets where they left their glasses. Put the handcrafted holder on a nightstand or dresser for a convenient landing spot at the end of the day and never worry about misplacing glasses again.

His charming presence isn’t just for the visually impaired. Debra Rukes, owner of Kretyen, says she uses this “little guy” to keep track of her sunglasses.

What you’ll pay: $15

About the store: Rukes left behind a 15-year career in teen pregnancy prevention to pursue a dream of opening Kretyen, and selling only fair-trade certified specialty items consumers can feel good about purchasing. Rukes works only with companies that pay their labor fair wages and provide safe working conditions. Each item leaves the store in a box or bag made from recycled paper and with a placard detailing who made the product.

While there is a steady stock of coffee and chocolate as in most fair-trade shops, Kretyen has jewelry made from recycled metals, sterling silver and stone; scarves; handmade journals; bowls; baskets; home decor; and other unique items that Rukes rotates into the small gift shop.

While you’re there: Rukes will probably be quick to ask you if you’d like a sample of a fair trade coffee or tea that she brews in the back of the shop for customers.
