Bicyclist struck, killed by car in rural Douglas County

A Douglas County Sheriff's officer escorts a bicyclist through a closed portion of County Road 458 at 4 p.m. Wednesday as officers investigate the death of another bicyclist who was struck and killed by a car earlier in the day.

An adult man on a bicycle was struck and killed by a car Wednesday afternoon in the 800 block of North 950 Road, Douglas County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Steve Lewis said.

Deputies responded to a report of an accident at about 12:30 p.m., Lewis said. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, Lewis said, adding that the driver of the car was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

He said it appears that the driver was passing a westbound vehicle, possibly a truck, when he struck the bicyclist, who was eastbound. The sheriff’s office would like the driver being passed to call 785-841-0007 or 785-424-4361.

The department did not release the identity of the bicyclist. Douglas County Sheriff’s officers were still investigating the scene and the road remained blocked as of 4:30 p.m.
