40 years ago: New A & P to be built at 23rd and Ousdahl

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 13, 1974:

Kansas Construction Co. was planning to begin work this week for the Southridge Shopping Center at 23rd and Ousdahl. Company president John Scanlan said the construction contracts had been signed and that he would obtain the building permit for the 80,000-square-foot center in a day or two. Scanlan estimated the building, which was to include an A & P supermarket, would take six to eight months to complete depending on the availability of materials. He said steel and finished hardware, such as doors, were particularly hard to find at a reasonable price right now.

Former Kansas University basketball and football coach Dr. F. C. (“Phog”) Allen was transferred from St. Luke’s Hospital to a nursing home in the Kansas City area today. He had been hospitalized after a recent illness. Dr. Allen, 88. who had retired as KU coach in 1956 after 39 years, was reported to be in good condition.
