The Kansas Highway Patrol will increase enforcement of traffic laws starting Thursday as part of a “Special Traffic Enforcement Program.”

STEP, funded by the Kansas Department of Transportation, allows officers to work additional hours during high-travel holiday periods. The Labor Day STEP campaign will last through Sept. 1, Lt. Joshua Kellerman of the highway patrol said.

Kellerman said officers will be actively looking for drunken drivers, those not wearing seatbelts or using child safety seats, those texting while driving and those committing other violations.

This is strictly my personal opinion and nothing more:
The public should never receive warnings of temporary additional efforts by the law enforcement community to increase everyone's safety. Everyone knows, or should know, what the driving laws are. Everyone's life is at stake.
