Highway Patrol to step up enforcement efforts Thursday

The Kansas Highway Patrol will increase enforcement of traffic laws starting Thursday as part of a “Special Traffic Enforcement Program.”

STEP, funded by the Kansas Department of Transportation, allows officers to work additional hours during high-travel holiday periods. The Labor Day STEP campaign will last through Sept. 1, Lt. Joshua Kellerman of the highway patrol said.

Kellerman said officers will be actively looking for drunken drivers, those not wearing seatbelts or using child safety seats, those texting while driving and those committing other violations.
