40 years ago: New law enforcement building to cost more than expected

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 28, 1974:

Costs for the proposed county-city judicial law enforcement building were going to be higher than first estimated, according to building architect Dick Peters. Inflation could add as much as $400,000 to the project, which had been estimated at $3.4 million during the previous year. Peters said he had designed the building for maximum efficiency and that the county “can’t get by on any less than the present plan.” The county had planned to pay for the project with $2.8 million raised through a special building mill levy, $400,000 in county revenue-sharing money, and $500,000 in Lawrence revenue-sharing money. County Commissioner Arthur Heck, responding to the news, said the increase was “not surprising considering the times we are in.”
