100 years ago: J-W editor gives strong opinion on Lawrence water situation

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 22, 1914:

  • [Editorial] “The quality of water being furnished the city is terrible. It is rotten dirty and the water company claims that it cannot even supply that kind of water. The company is again asking for permission to go to the river. The public utilities commission is being asked to help out. It is a shame that the city of Lawrence should be at the mercy of the water company. It is time for drastic action and the new commission should take hold at once to push the purchase of the plant. Lawrence cannot have good water until it owns the plant…. If the present company will not sell for a reasonable price then it ought to be put out of business. A new plant can be built and the city will be independent. The present water condition is intolerable.”
  • “But for the presence of mind of the motorman there would have been a serious street car accident in the 1100 block on Massachusetts street this morning. Ralph McCleary was on the car track and in some way did not hear the gong as sounded by the motorman. When the car was upon the lad the motorman lowered the fender and caught the boy. It was almost a miracle that no one was hurt. The boy went on to school and apparently thought little of his narrow escape.”
  • “Last evening when a load of hay was taking possession of the street car track an automobile attempted to pass between the load of hay and the car. The passageway was narrow and the car hit the street car, breaking the fender. It was a careless trick and came near being a serious accident.”
  • “The group system of courses in use at the University will be made more liberal for students according to a committee report which was made at the meeting of the college faculty yesterday afternoon. With the new system any students may take 40 hours work in one department for his ‘minor’ when heretofore he was only allowed to take 30 hours. In the Junior and Senior years students will be allowed to take 12 hours a year in one department…. The ‘major’ system, which allows the students to take 60 hours in one department, probably will not be changed, although the matter was not definitely settled at the meeting yesterday afternoon.”
  • “Mr. W. N. Jones who was stricken with paralysis in the G. A. R. rooms in the Court House yesterday is no better today. His condition has not changed since the stroke either for the better or worse. His right side is entirely paralyzed.”
