Police: Man with hatchet breaks into home, flees when resident wakes up

Early Sunday morning, a Lawrence resident was woken by a man standing in his bedroom holding a flashlight in one hand and a hatchet in the other, according to police.

Officers responded to a burglary in progress at a home in the 1800 block of Villo Woods Court about 4 a.m. Sunday, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Trent McKinley. Police talked with the resident, who reported that the suspect fled when he woke up.

McKinley said nothing was reported missing, but officers determined that the suspect forced entry through a window.

Police have not identified the suspect and are continuing to investigate, McKinley said. The suspect is said to be a white man about 20 years old and average height and weight.
