Award-winning Sports Illustrated journalist to speak at KU event

Gary Smith, an award-winning journalist with Sports Illustrated, will speak via Skype at the annual Budig Writing Professor event at the Kansas University campus Tuesday.

Scott Reinardy, an associate professor at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, will host the event, titled “Inside the Writer’s Room: A Conversation with Sports Illustrated’s Gary Smith.” Smith, best known for his lengthy human interest stories, will discuss crafting stories that go beyond sports and examine the human emotion behind them.

Smith has worked at Sports Illustrated since 1983 and is the four-time winner of the National Magazine Award. One of his most widely recognized writings is “Remember His Name,” an article published in 2006 about Pat Tillman, a professional football player who resigned from the NFL to enlist in the U.S. Army after 9/11. After news came out that Tillman’s death was caused by friendly fire, Smith wrote about how his death was misrepresented and used as propaganda to promote the war.

The discussion, which is open to the public, will be held in the Clarkson Gallery of Stauffer-Flint Hall, 1435 Jayhawk Blvd., starting at 12:30 p.m. A hot dog lunch precedes the event.
