40 years ago: Mass Street merchants compete in relay race

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 21, 1974:

In an event designed to highlight the Kansas Relays, under way this week at Kansas University, the Downtown Lawrence Association held a relay race this morning on Massachusetts Street. Merchants on the west side of Mass triumphed in the second annual DLA Relay, running from Seventh Street to Eleventh in record time. Max Martin of Bud Jennings Carpets and Draperies, 1007 Mass, carried the winning baton over the finish line. Steve Vormehr, representing General Jeans, 1000 Mass, ran the last stretch for the losing team. The DLA was also planning to donate from $50 to $100 to the Kansas All Sports Hall of Fame, which was to be located in the Elizabeth M. Watkins Community Museum at 11th and Mass.
