40 years ago: Dedication planned for Wescoe Hall

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 15, 1974:

The dedication for Wescoe Hall, Kansas University’s new $7.6 million humanities building, was scheduled for the coming Saturday. The ceremonies were to honor W. Clarke Wescoe, who had served as KU chancellor from 1960 to 1969 and who was now chairman of the board of the Sterling Drug Co. Featured speaker at the dedication was to be C. N. Cushing of Lawrence, chair of the University State Bank and a member of the Kansas Board of Regents in the 1960s. Also scheduled to speak were James Seaver, professor of history and chair of the Humanities Building Committee; Chancellor Archie Dykes; Regent Henry Bubb of Topeka; Executive Vice Chancellor Del Shankel; and the previous year’s KU student body president. Shankel was also scheduled to present a bronze bust of Clarke Wescoe, sculpted by KU professor of sculpture Eldon Tefft. The bust was to be placed later inside the doors on the ground floor at the east end of the building. Following the dedication ceremonies, tours of the new building were to be given by KU students.
