25 years ago: Turnpike bridge renovation to continue into early summer

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 11, 1989:

Work was expected to continue until mid-June on the bridge at the west Lawrence exit of the Kansas Turnpike. Tom Wurdeman, division engineer for the Kansas Turnpike Authority, said workers from United Bridge Company Inc., Lenexa, had been reconstructing the bridge’s deck since early March. Workers were constructing a new 8 1/2-inch concrete deck that would be two feet wider than the old deck. The $178,600 project was to be half-completed by the end of this week and one of the newly reconstructed lane would be opened to traffic. Wurdeman said deterioration on the 35-year-old bridge had been caused by salt and sand that was digging its way into the steel structure.
