25 years ago: Officials attempting to identify body found in river

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 8, 1989:

Douglas County sheriff’s officers this morning were attempting to identify a man’s body found floating the previous day in the Wakarusa River about four miles east of Lawrence. The body, which appeared to be that of a middle-aged man, had been discovered by a canoeist at about 5 p.m. just south of the Kansas Highway 10 bridge. Undersheriff Don Dalquest said the body was clothed and that no signs of foul play had been detected. Dalquest said investigators had no theories to explain the man’s death, and neither he nor Sheriff Loren Anderson knew of any people reported missing in recent weeks who fit the man’s description.
