Free State softball splits at SM South

? Free State High’s softball team received two strong outings from pitchers Meredith Morris and Kaley Delg in its season-opening doubleheader against Shawnee Mission South, and came away with a 1-1 record.

The Firebirds dropped Game One, 2-0, despite a complete-game three-hitter from Morris. Morris allowed two runs and struck out eight while walking none.

Free State bounced back in Game Two to win, 6-1, behind multi-hit games from Emily Bermel and Emily Byers.

Delg also went the distance to earn the win.

FSHS will play again Tuesday against Olathe South.
