Topeka ? The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department received a 2013 Kansas Health Champion award from Gov. Sam Brownback during the second annual Kansas Obesity Summit.

Lawrence Parks and Recreation has more than 450 programs and activities.

In recent years, the department added a nutrition education program and it assists with a community program that transforms vacant city properties into community gardens.
