Two sporting events are expected to bring in more than 6,500 participants and make an impact of more than $100,000 on the Lawrence economy on Saturday: The Color Run in the morning and the Bike MS: Kansas City Ride that afternoon.

The Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau expects more than 4,000 people to participate in The Color Run, which begins at 9 am. in Watson Park. Participants will run in white T-shirts through yellow, orange, pink and blue powder. At the finish line a festival area will be filled with music, dancing, giveaways and “color explosions.” The event is not timed and is open to people of all ages. Registration is available online at http://thecolorrun.com/lawrence/. A portion of the run’s proceeds will benefit Van Go Inc., an arts-based social service agency that serves high-needs and under-served youth.

At about 11 a.m., more than 2,500 cyclists from the Bike MS: Kansas City Ride will arrive at the Cycling Village in South Park, where they will spend the night. The Gears & Grooves Festival will take over the park from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., featuring live music, food and beer for purchase. The event is open to the public. On Sunday, the group will return to the ride’s origin in Olathe. The ride is expected to raise more than $1 million for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Convention and visitors officials say that enough people are expected to attend the events from outside of Lawrence, many of them staying overnight, to create more than $100,000 in economic impact.
