Lawrence man arrested on suspicion of drug, gun, offenses after injury accident in North Lawrence

A Lawrence man was arrested on suspicion of drug and gun offenses Tuesday night after being involved in an accident that injured two other people in North Lawrence, according to police.

Kenny A. McGee, 40, was arrested near the scene of an accident at Seventh and Elm streets about 9 p.m. Tuesday, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. The accident occurred when McGee, driving east on Elm, ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle. McGee’s vehicle turned over onto its side in the intersection, McKinley said, and he walked away from the accident with minor injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 17-year-old female, of Lawrence, was wearing a seatbelt but appeared to have been injured and was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. A 13-year-old passenger in that car also appeared to be injured but was not taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Police responding to the accident arrested McGee, who had walked away from the scene, and arrested him on suspicion of DUI. Officers seized at least two bags from the scene containing prescription medication that was not prescribed to McGee, drug paraphernalia, what officers believed to be methamphetamine and marijuana, and a 9 mm handgun.

Officers later got a search warrant to have a blood test administered to McGee, against his wishes, McKinley said. McGee was booked into Douglas County Jail on suspicion of DUI, refusing a breath test, and multiple offenses related to the drugs and gun.

McGee was convicted of burglary in Crawford County in 2006, and of theft in Douglas County in 2007. He was in jail today with bond set at $15,250.
