From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 6, 1973:

Expenditures by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were possibly going to lead to bicycle trails, boat ramps, and camping and picnic areas along the miles of city-owned riverfront. City officials learned this week that development of recreation sites could begin in as little as one year. A bicycle and hiking trail along the 11-mile stretch of the Kansas River, on land originally bought for flood protection, could ultimately connect about half a dozen camping areas.

Figures were released today indicating that the cost of repairing storm damage at the Douglas County Courthouse would probably top $6,000. A severe summer storm had blown out a skylight and thrown shards of glass through the building’s stained-glass dome. Estimates were for $434 to fix the skylight and $5,680 to repair the stained glass.

After a short revisiting of summerlike weather, blankets were back in style as overnight temperatures this week dipped to the low 60s and even into the mid-50s
