25 years ago: KU classical statue collection to find a home in new gallery

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 28, 1988:

After a 100-year odyssey, Kansas University’s collection of Greek artifacts and plaster copies of classical Greek statues were to find a permanent home at last. The statues, which had first been installed on the second floor of old Fraser Hall in 1888, were to go in public display this weekend in a new gallery in 103 Lippincott Hall. Speaking at the 1888 installation ceremony, Greek and Latin department head David H. Robinson had said, “We want, and confidently expect to have some day, a classical museum worthy of our great growing state; for we are confident that rich and generous Kansas will not neglect the educational needs of her bright sons and daughters.” His wish was finally coming true, thanks in large part to the late Mary Amelia Grant, a KU classics professor who had been curator of the collection until her retirement in 1960. Grant had contributed more than $20,000 toward its installation and display before her death in 1987 at age 97.
