Suspects lead Jefferson County sheriffs on car chase, crash into tree

A Topeka man and woman were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital on Sunday morning after a vehicle crashed into a tree following a brief car chase with Jefferson County sheriffs officers near Perry.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig said he expects Thad Antiny Vanvleck, 24, and Kelli Marie Vanvleck, 36, to be charged with breaking into Hamm Waste Management Asphalt & Shop, at 14372 U.S. 24 in Perry, to steal copper wire.

Authorities were called to the scene and a car chase ensued. The driver of the vehicle eventually lost control and crashed into a tree after failing to negotiate a turn at Fifth Street and Pawnee Road. Herrig, who was not present at the scene, did not know how fast the vehicle was going.

The two suspects then attempted to flee on foot, but they didn’t get far before being apprehended, Herrig said. Both were taken to the hospital, according to the crash report.

No officers were injured over the course of the chase, Herrig said, and he believed neither suspect suffered life-threatening injuries.
