Early morning town home fire causes $25,000 in damage, still under investigation

Residents of a townhome in the 200 block of Pinecone Drive were safely evacuated after a two-alarm fire caused $25,000 in damage and killed one of two pets, said Division Chief Eve Tolefree.

The fire was reported just before 2:20 a.m. at 269 Pinecone Drive after a resident reported black smoke coming from the second story of the building, but did not know what was on fire. The residents of the address reported that everyone had made it out safely and Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical extinguished the fire by 2:44 a.m., Tolefree said.

One occupant was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and later Kansas University Medical Center for further care. Two pets were also removed from the town home, one dead and another transported to a local veterinarian’s office, according to Tolefree. She added that there were no injuries to fire department personnel and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
