25 years ago: KU researchers to study effects of children’s television

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 25, 1988:

  • Researchers at Kansas University this week announced the launch of a $1.2 million study on the effects of television on the development of economically disadvantaged children in the Kansas City area. The seven-year project, which would be financed by Children’s Television Workshop and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, was to begin immediately. The study was to focus on differences in development of children whose earliest TV viewing was of educational children’s programs versus those who watched primarily entertainment programming.
  • Members of the 19th Street Task Force met for the first time this week and immediately asked for data to identify the street’s problem areas. The task force had been formed the previous month by the Lawrence City Commission to study traffic and safety concerns on the east-west road. Members asked city staff to provide accident reports, traffic counts, and a detailed map.
