Dagwood's Dream sandwich at Yello Sub, 1814 W. 23rd St.

Named after “Blondie” comic strip character Dagwood Bumstead, who dreamt of a multilayered sandwich stacked with a variety of obscure meats, cheese and condiments, the “Dagwood’s Dream” at Yello Sub will satisfy multiple cravings at once. Not quite the piled-high illustration, this toasted 6-inch whole wheat bun (baked from scratch every morning) is loaded with pastrami, roast beef, ham, Monterey Jack, onions, lettuce, tomatoes and a creamy horseradish sauce. Feel free to make it even dreamier with extra cheese, meat, veggies or guacamole for an additional charge. Make Dagwood proud.

Where to get it: Yello Sub, 1814 W. 23rd St.

What you’ll pay: $4.99

Try it with: A side salad for $1.09 — the choice between homestyle potato, tangy slaw or spiral pasta salad with veggies.

Also on the menu: Any sandwich you could think of from classic clubs to veggie options to seafood specialities like the Crab Californian to more exotic subs like the Tempeh Parmesan, the Tijuana Taxi or The Pesto-Bello.

— Off The Beaten Plate highlights some of the more exotic, oddly named or inventively concocted dishes from local menus. Know of an offbeat item we should check out? Email food and features reporter Nadia Imafidon at nimafidon@ljworld.com. Follow her at Twitter.com/nadia_imafidon.
