KU rowing shines at home regatta

Kansas University claimed eight top-five finishes at its first Jayhawk Rowing Jamboree on Sunday, KU’s first true home regatta since 2005.

An estimated 2,000 fans attended the event.

KU won the day’s first event, the Varsity Eight. Rowing in the boat were seniors Caitlyn Decker, Elizabeth Scherer, Kaylee Sextro, Alexandra Torquemada, juniors Brooke Thuston, Claudijah Lever, Erin Brogan, sophomore Maggie Duncan and senior coxswain Catherine Clements. Kansas (B) was fourth while Kansas (C) finished ninth.

Kansas placed second in Novice Eight. Rowing for Kansas were freshmen Rayna Barnes, Christina Granzow, Madison Hovis, Lexie Lanphere, Olivia Loney, Emma O’Neill, Katherine Young and coxswain Kenzie Obrochta.

Kansas added a third-place finish in the Women’s Pair. Rowing in the boat were juniors Julia Alvey and Erin Brogan. KU (C) finished fourth, and KU (B) placed fifth.

KU sophomore Maggie Duncan claimed second place in the Women’s Single. Seniors Alexandra Torquemada, Kaylee Sextro, and junior Angie Flores-Rodriguez placed 3-4-5.

Kansas (A) was third in Novice Four.

KU will travel Nov. 2-3 to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Head of the Hooch.
