WVU blanks KU soccer

? Kansas University’s soccer team gave up two goals in the first 15 minutes at West Virginia on Friday night, and the Mountaineers held on for a 2-0 victory.

Kansas (5-8-2 overall, 0-3-1 Big 12) remained scoreless in conference play, while WVU stayed undefeated in its six league matches for a 9-2-2 record.

Kelsie Maloney scored the Mountaineers’ first goal in the 10th minute, beating a defender in the Jayhawks’ 18-yard box for a right-footed strike past KU goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud.

WVU’s Frances Silva, a graduate of Blue Valley North, followed with a shot from the top of the penalty box in the 14th minute.

Junior Jamie Fletcher tallied four shots for Kansas, but KU managed just six all game — three in the first half, three in the second — and just two shots on goal.

WVU launched 11 attempts in the first period but just four in the second half.

“I really feel like we outplayed them in large chunks of the game tonight,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “To go down two goals that early and keep fighting really shows a lot about the team’s character. We just came out a little intimidated early, and it ended up costing us. I’m not disappointed with how we played tonight because we really fought and competed hard.”

The Jayhawks will host defending league champion Baylor at 1 p.m. Sunday.
