Hizmet Relief donates 500 pounds of meat to Just Food

Hizmet Relief will donate 500 pounds of packaged meat to Just Food to honor the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, or The Feast of Sacrifice.

Observers of the holiday order an animal to be processed, with one-third of the meat kept for one’s own family, one-third given to family and friends and the last third donated to feed the less fortunate. The holiday began Monday and ended Tuesday evening.

Hizmet Relief is an Islamic charity headquartered in Carlstadt, N.J., that focuses on poverty, hunger and disaster relief. It distributed more than 30,000 pounds of food in 2012, and has delivered more than 40,000 pounds in 2013, according to a statement.

Eid al-Adha commemorates the Prophet Abraham’s willingness to follow God’s command to sacrifice his son, who in Islam is Ishmael.
