A bicyclist was seriously injured late Friday after being struck by a sport utility vehicle that left the scene.

The accident was reported around 11:40 p.m. near 15th and Massachusetts streets, Journal-World news partner Operation 100 reported.

Police say a dark-colored SUV struck the bicyclist and continued westbound on 15th Street. The bicyclist’s injuries were reported to be serious and medics requested a Life Star helicopter for transport.

The helicopter landed on the football field on the east side of Liberty Memorial Central Middle School, 1400 Massachusetts St., before it transported the bicyclist to Stormont-Vail in Topeka.

Information on the bicyclist’s identify and condition was not available on Saturday.
