Massachusetts Street businesses to host charity shopping event

Businesses along Massachusetts Street will be treating certain customers with special deals Thursday as part of Downtown Lawrence Inc.’s third annual “Girls Night Downtown” charity shopping event.

Because October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the proceeds will go to The Willow Domestic Violence Center, which provides counseling and other services to domestic violence victims.

The event, 5-8:30 p.m., features store discounts, raffles and a photo shoot. Participants must purchase a ticket — $10 dollars for students with an ID and $20 for others — that will give them access to special discounts in participating businesses and a chance to win one of 10 raffle prizes, also donated by the participating businesses.

All ticket proceeds will be donated to the Willow center, according to Downtown Lawrence Executive Director Sally Zogry. As of Wednesday evening 400 tickets had been sold, she said. Ticket booths will be set up Thursday near Hobbs, at 700 Massachusetts St., and Weaver’s Department Store, at 901 Massachusetts St.

Forty-one businesses, mostly in the 700-900 blocks, are taking part, Zogry said. Many of them will also hood special events of their own, such as food specials or photo booths. Bars and restaurants will host after parties, which run all evening.

For a donation to the Willow center, visitors can participate in a red carpet photo shoot outside the Lawrence Antique Mall, 830 Massachusetts St., and receive a copy of their picture.
