The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office honored two deputies Thursday evening for extraordinary service in the field.

Deputies Robert Berryman and Allen Kinsley received the office’s Commendation and Life Saving awards, respectively, from Undersheriff Steve Hornberger at the Douglas County Courthouse.

Berryman, who has been with the department for more than 15 years, earned the award for the way he subdued and handcuffed a dangerous suspect in September 2000. Hornberger said the suspect held a large sword and, after putting it down, advanced on Berryman — the only police officer on the scene. When the suspect turned around to retrieve the sword, Berryman tackled him without injuring himself or the suspect.

Berryman said after the ceremony it felt good to be recognized.

Kinsley, who has been with the department for more than four years, received his award for his efforts to save a man’s life in February. Kinsley was dispatched to a home where a man was not breathing and did not have a pulse. He administered CPR and used his defibrillator until medical personnel arrived.

The man arrived at the hospital with a pulse but later died. Hornberger said Kinsley’s actions prolonged his life, which allowed the family time to deal with the situation.

“It’s humbling,” Kinsley said of receiving the award.

He added that, as someone whose job it is to protect people, it is “a little weird” to be recognized with an award for doing just that.

Both deputies, dressed in full uniform, receive a medal and a framed certificate.

Thursday’s ceremony was held in conjunction with the graduation of 12 people from the Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy.
