The 2013-2014 Kansas University basketball season kicks off Friday with the annual Late Night in the Phog event at Allen Fieldhouse. Fans will be able to get their first look at newcomers to this year's men's and women's basketball teams.
The 29th annual Late Night in the Phog features skits starring members of the basketball teams, music by the KU pep band, video highlights, coach and player introductions, and scrimmages with the teams. The event is taking place a little earlier than usual this season, due to the NCAA moving up the start of men's fall basketball practice by two weeks to allow for more flexible scheduling.
Late Night in the Phog traditionally brings a capacity crowd of about 16,000 to Allen Fieldhouse. Admission is free and on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. (and close when the arena is filled), with the event going from 6:30 p.m. to about 9:30 p.m. Children 12 and under will not be admitted without an adult.
Attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items that will be donated to Lawrence's Just Food, which will also be taking cash donations on site.
Hoglund Ballpark will be open for any overflow crowd, weather permitting. The baseball stadium's video board will be simulcast with that of Allen Fieldhouse, and concession stands and restrooms will be open.
With school in session, all university parking lots will be permit only until 5 p.m., with the exception of Lot 90, located across Naismith Drive to the east and south of Allen Fieldhouse, which will be available for public parking at 3 p.m. During the day, parking is available in the parking garage north of the fieldhouse for hourly rates, or $5 per vehicle after 4 p.m. Vehicles driving to Allen Fieldhouse from the north or Interstate 70 (exit 202) are reminded that Iowa Street remains under construction from Harvard Avenue north of 15th Street to 19th Street.
Late Night in the Phog will be produced by Metro Sports and seen live on the Jayhawk TV Network, including ESPN3, and broadcast on the Jayhawk Radio Network.
