25 years ago: Former KU band directors serve as parade marshals on Band Day

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 2, 1988:

It was a big day and a musical one for Kansas University as musicians came from far and wide to participate in the 41st annual Band Day. Students from 75 Kansas and Missouri high schools marched in a morning parade in downtown Lawrence and performed later with the Marching Jayhawks during halftime at the KU-New Mexico State football game. Three former KU band directors — Russell L. Wiley, Kenneth Bloomquist, and George Boberg — served as marshals for the parade and were honored during the halftime show. Ron McCurdy, an assistant KU band director, said that there appeared to be a renewed interest in Band Day because KU’s music program was producing more of the state’s music teachers. “A lot of high school band directors in Kansas are a part of our program or have some kind of affiliation with us. They stay loyal. They don’t forget their roots,” McCurdy said.
