When it comes to the holidays, Washington provides a great template for the perfect holiday party look. Those who want to replicate Washington’s look at their holiday parties can find a dress at Spectator’s Inc., 710 Massachusetts St., that has a similar cut and style as one that Washington recently wore.

This classic fit-and-flare dress is perfect for anyone who needs an upgrade on their little black dress. At $140, this dress isn’t just a one-and-done party outfit, but rather a true investment piece.

“It’s an investment in style,” Spectator’s owner Kathleen Swanson said.

Swanson explained that the advantage of classic pieces like the ones Kerry Washington is known for is that they are timeless as well as seasonless. For instance, the black fit-and-flare party dress is simple enough that it will still be in style 10 or even 20 years from now, Swanson said. Simply update your accessories and you’ve updated the dress.

“You could really change its attitude with accessories,” Swanson said. “It’s like a pallet that you can change.”

And this dress doesn’t have to be relegated to holiday parties.

“You could put a jean jacket with it and really dress it down,” Swanson said.

Swanson’s daughter, Alex Swanson, who also works at Spectator’s, said the possibilities with this little black dress are endless.

“It could go really preppy to really edgy,” Alex said.

Alex suggested changing up the dress with tights. A sparkly pair of tights could make the dress festive for New Year’s Eve, she said, while a pair of knee-high stockings could make the dress a little edgier.

“Your makeup can also make a big difference,” Kathleen Swanson said.

Jamie Giersch, a stylist at Rejuvene Salon and Spa, 13 E. Eighth St., describes Kerry Washington’s hair and makeup as the perfect combination of put-together and subtly styled. It’s sleek, yet natural.

To accomplish this look, Giersch recommends natural-toned makeup. She said people can mix it by adding a slightly more dramatic look to the eyes or lips, depending on the occasion.

But Giersch said that when it comes to adding a little makeup it’s important to pick either the eyes or the lips as a focal point. Bright lipstick with dramatic eye shadow can be overkill, she said.

“I like to up play eyes,” Giersch said.

As for hair, Giersch recommends classic waves or a low gathered updo for anyone who wants to achieve Kerry Washington’s confident style.

She recommends Pureology Supreme Control light hair spray and Pureology TextureTwists to keep your locks in place.
