Billed as “The One Art Show You Shouldn’t Miss,” the Bizarre Bazaar is celebrating its 25th year of bringing up-cycled, funky, eclectic arts and crafts to Lawrence shoppers over Thanksgiving weekend.

Apparently the artists agree with the billing for the BizBaz, as it has come to be known — limited spaces for the show filled up in a record four days in the spring, and even past regulars had to be put on the waiting list. More than 130 artists will fill up the three floors of the Lawrence Arts Center with handmade items, alongside live music, food and drinks.

With an advantage given to local artists through their snail-mail “first received” basis of registration, about 60 percent of BizBaz artists are from Lawrence and most of the rest are from other parts of Kansas or Missouri, with a sprinkling of artists coming in from states such as Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Elenor Buffington, co-administrator of the show, also known as “Empress of the BizBaz,” said: “The BizBaz is always changing. While we often have returning artists, an interesting aspect of this event is that a returning artist doesn’t automatically equate to the same artwork. There are several people who decide to try a new technique or work in a completely new medium because the environment encourages change and unique, interesting art. The variety at this show is always a nice surprise.”

Five of the nine “Founding Mothers” of the show have been in every show since its inception, which was held in the living room of one of the Mothers. It has grown a bit since then, but the show is still organized by the artists, who form committees to handle the logistics and to keep the costs low.

Marsene Feldt, the other Empress of the BizBaz, said, “Every item for sale at the Bizarre Bazaar is original, hand-crafted or created by the person selling it. Nothing is made from a store-bought kit or resale from another person’s efforts. Everyone is able to find something they didn’t know they needed. We see hundreds of ‘regulars’ every year. Dozens even come with their shopping list for the holidays knowing they will be able to find that perfect gift for the hard-to-shop-for person.”
