Road conditions back to normal, winter weather advisory for county canceled

The National Weather Service in Topeka canceled its winter weather advisory for Douglas County this morning after most roads in the Lawrence area were back to normal after Kansas Department of Transportation crews treated roadways overnight and precipitation moved out of the area before sunrise.

Some residents may notice ice on their cars and elevated surfaces such as decks and bridges as well as driveways and parking lots may still be slick.

Friday’s forecast called for mostly cloudy skies and highs in the low 40s with winds reaching 10 to 20 mph. Temperatures will likely drop to 27 overnight and Saturday is expected to be partly cloudy and windy again.

A car carrying a 30-year-old Iowa man and 30-year-old New Mexico man overturned after an accident on Interstate 70 in West Lawrence near Lecompton Thursday evening. At 10:25 p.m., a Ford F-150 driven by Ahmed Turki, Des Moines, Iowa, was westbound when Turki lost control and the vehicle slid across all lanes of traffic before leaving the roadway and overturning in a ditch, according to a Kansas Turnpike accident report.

Turki and a passenger, Qais Al-Kafajy, Albuquerque, N.M., both wore seat belts and were listed as injuried.
