A win for Kansas University’s women’s basketball team in its first road game of the season tonight in Minneapolis would please coach Bonnie Henrickson on a couple of levels.

Winning their fourth straight game would be one thing for the Jayhawks, but defeating Minnesota at Williams Arena would add some sparkle to their NCAA résumé.

“It’s a good Big Ten test for us, and you get more pop from a road win,” said 10th-year coach Henrickson, whose Kansas teams are 44-86 away from Allen Fieldhouse in her tenure.

The road game against the Golden Gophers (2-1) is the first in a four-game stretch away from Lawrence for KU (3-0). From Nov. 28-30, the Jayhawks will play three straight days in the Global Payments Virgin Islands Paradise Jam, against Central Michigan, Xavier and Duke.

“Other than the fact that the Virgin Islands is a nice place to be,” Henrickson said, “we haven’t talked about anybody else that’s there.”

That’s because the coach is far more concerned right now with Minnesota’s talent. A 6-foot-5 freshman center, Amanda Zahui leads the Gophers with 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds a game. Micaella Riche, a 6-2 senior forward, has near-duplicate numbers: 16.3 points, 10 rebounds.

“Minnesota’s big and physical, and they play in a good league, like we do, so we’ll see,” Henrickson said of how her team would handle its road debut.

Junior Kansas forward Chelsea Gardner is scoring a team-best 22.3 points a game thus far and pulling down 8.3 rebounds. Junior guard Asia Boyd averages 18.0 points and 6.0 boards.

Both the Gophers and Jayhawks played Creighton in their previous game. KU won, 74-66, at home on Sunday, and Minnesota lost, 63-52, Saturday on the road.
