The Lawrence school board will start discussing the fine details of how they want the soon-to-be remodeled schools to look, including energy-efficient design concepts for heating, lighting and air conditioning.

The board will hold a work session at 5 p.m. Monday, in advance of its regular 7 p.m. business meeting, to discuss those ideas with Assistant Superintendent Kyle Hayden and bond project manager Dean Youngers.

The construction and renovation projects are being funded with the $92.5 million bond issue that district voters approved April 2.

According to a preliminary timeline, the first construction projects are slated to begin in January at Hillcrest and Langston Hughes schools. That will be followed in March with the start of construction at Cordley.

The district hopes to have all construction and remodeling finished by the end of summer 2016.

Also Monday, the board will hear a report from an advisory committee of high school teachers that will recommend the district not try to offer an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in addition to the existing Advanced Placement program.

According to a memo to the board, the advisory committee believes the AP program is more aligned to the new Common Core standards in English language arts and math, as well as the Next Generation Science Standards, which have been adopted in Kansas.

“Additionally, committee members feel that the establishment of an IB Diploma Programme would conflict with the equity efforts of the district by focusing a substantial amount of funding for the benefit of very few already high-achieving students,” the memo stated.

In other business, the board will:

• Consider authorizing the sale of 2.74 acres near Langston Hughes school to Alvamar, Inc., for $206,400. The land would be used for construction of a road linking Bob Billings Parkway to a new commercial and residential development planned to the north. The agreement also calls on the district to contribute $173,250 toward the construction of the city street.

• Consider a contract for $14,491 with the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence to provide after-school programming for middle school students during the 2013-2014 fiscal year.

• Consider a lease with Haskell Property for approximately 25,000 square feet of warehouse space at 910 East 29th St. for $7,842 per month.

• Authorize the transfer of a Civil War-era cemetery the district owns at 1350 N. 1750 Rd. to Curtis and Marilyn Hall for one dollar.

• And consider continuation of the Employee Assistance Program with New Directions Behavioral Health as the provider.
