Two Lawrence teenagers taken to hospitals after one-vehicle accident on rural road

Two Lawrence teenagers were taken to area hospitals after a single-vehicle wreck on East 1550 Road in rural Douglas County.

Cody Thompson was flown by helicopter to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., and Marquise Guesby was taken by ground ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, according to Steve Lewis, a Douglas County Sheriff Department spokesperson.

Guesby was treated and released from the hospital, a nursing supervisor said.

Both are under 17 years old, Lewis said. He could not say whether the injuries were life-threatening but described them as “serious.”

Two other Lawrence teenagers, Nicholas Ham and Jordan Green, were also in the car but declined medical attention, Lewis said. They are also under 17 years old, Lewis said.

The vehicle was traveling north on East 1550 Road, narrow and made of gravel, at a speed “faster than prudent,” Lewis said. The driver, who did not have a license to drive, lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree near the road.
