Lawrence-Douglas County Fire-Medical crews responded to a house fire late this morning in the 1000 block of West 20th Street.

Chief Mark Bradford said each of the five occupants home at the time of the fire made it out safely, and residents could be seen taking shelter in a vehicle outside the home along 20th Street.

When fire-medical crews responded to the call at 11:34 a.m., Bradford said, heavy flames were coming from the front-left bedroom window of the house. Speaking at the scene, Bradford said that Douglas County Red Cross had been contacted to assist the occupants with shelter.

“There was significant damage throughout the entire house,” Bradford said.

The street, between Alabama and Mitchell streets, was closed off and was expected to remain closed until early this afternoon as fire-medical crews continue to investigate.

A water main on Maine Street just north of 20th Street broke while crews responded to the fire, which Bradford said was not uncommon. He said parts of the street would likely be closed later today to allow the city’s utility department to fix the water main.

Additional information is expected to be released later today.
