Free State football earns No. 1 seed for playoffs

The 28-10 City Showdown victory Friday over Lawrence High that sealed the Free State football team’s District 1 championship also wrapped up a No. 1 seed on the east side of the Class 6A state playoffs bracket for the Firebirds.

KSHSAA announced the seeds and first-round matchups for all16 6A playoff teams Saturday morning and FSHS (8-1) sat atop the bracket. The Firebirds, who beat out Shawnee Mission East (8-1) and Gardner-Edgerton (8-1) for the top seed, will play host to No. 8 seed Shawnee Mission Northwest (3-6), at 7 p.m. Friday.

Free State defeated SMNW, 20-3, on the road Sept. 13.

Another win against the Cougars would advance the Firebirds to a Nov. 15 second-round game against either No. 4 seed Blue Valley Northwest (7-2) or No. 5 Olathe North (6-3), the only team to defeat FSHS this season.

Derby (8-1, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A by Kpreps.com) earned the west’s No. 1 seed.
