40 years ago: KU setting thermostats lower this winter

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 2, 1973:

  • Occupants of Kansas University buildings were probably going to feel a slight chill this winter. The buildings and grounds department this week was in the process of setting all KU thermostats at 70 degrees, a decrease from settings of 72, 74, or even higher during previous years. Lee Ousdahl, assistant director of physical plant, said the move had been ordered by Chancellor Archie Dykes and was intended to help KU do its part to conserve energy supplies. Ousdahl said that government officials had estimated huge savings of energy if everyone would lower their thermostats.
  • Most faculty members in the vocational and technical fields at Haskell Indian Junior College were to be promoted one step following a civil service classification review of all instructional personnel at the school. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) review team had recommended an overwhelming majority of instructors with a GS-9 Civil Service rating to be moved up a step to a GS-11 rating.
