40 years ago: School board decides on principalships for four schools

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 31, 1973:

  • Members of the USD 497 Board of Education decided at their meeting this week to share a principal between Woodlawn and Grant schools. It was noted in an article today that this item had not appeared on the agenda, nor had it been brought to the attention of the news media prior to the meeting. It was revealed at the meeting that two board members had met with seven Woodlawn parents on the night before the meeting to discuss a possible half-time principal at the school. At the official meeting, the board also voted unanimously to have a shared principalship between Pinckney and Riverside schools effective July 1.
  • A front-page photo featured Kansas University student Mary Seiwert, who was working on the KU grounds crew this summer. The caption read, “Beneath the hard hats that the Kansas University building and grounds employees wear can be seen the long hair and pigtails of several girls who are working on the campus this summer.” Seiwert, a junior majoring in occupational therapy, was shown mowing the lawn of the chancellor’s residence.
