25 years ago: Lawrence woman accidentally receives shipment of thousands of tropical flowers

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 28, 1988:

  • Lawrence resident Kate Morris was pictured on this morning’s front page surrounded by thousands of tropical flowers. Morris had arranged to have three florist-size boxes of exotic blooms shipped from Jamaica to use as decorations for a friend’s wedding. However, the gardener on the other end of the deal apparently had much larger boxes in mind, and Morris was now attempting to sell about 3,000 of the flowers (about 260 pounds) at bargain prices while they were still fresh.
  • Remember Putt-Putt Golf? The miniature golf facility, located at 31st and Iowa, announced today that their usual midnight closing time was to be extended to 1 a.m. on Memorial Day weekend. Families and other mini-golf fans were invited to enjoy the 36 holes there, along with batting cages and Edy’s Grand ice cream. The Joyland Amusement Park in Topeka was also running Memorial Day Weekend specials, with 22 rides and attractions, free balloons, and free popcorn.
